Working with Big Brothers Big Sisters:
Self Reflection:
Before this project began I was very skeptical. I didn't think what we were doing was going to be very worthwhile because it wasn't a crazy big act of community service. Before this week I always thought that to make a difference in the community you had to devote all your time and effort into your service but throughout this week I realized that was wrong. I found out that I can make a difference in someone's life. Before this project I didn't think I could truly change someone's life for the better. Creating the STEM kits showed me a different light. I was able to see that everything I do can and will affect others, hopefully for the better.
Day 1 and 2: I found the last two days to be incredibly useful. Before, I had no idea how to create a resume and assumed it was going to be a incredibly daring task. After working with Ally I realized that this is something I can do. I realized that it doesn't take much experience to build a professional resume and just how important a resume is in life. Also I took a career cluster test, at first I thought of this as more of a gimmick because I am very certain of what I want to pursue, but after completing the test I learned incredibly valuable information. After taking the test which suggested I become a engineer I was taught everything I needed to do to know about wages and levels of education. I already knew that I wanted to become an engineer and taking this test has helped me solidify my knowledge on this career path.
Day 3: This was the first day I worked with Big Brothers Big Sisters. When we arrived we were briefed on our task by Anita, the lady in charge of the Discovery Festival. At first it seemed like we had a mountain of work ahead of us. After delegating tasks I ended up working with Nick on designing the challenge for Kids ranging from 6th to 8th grade. We spent this day coming up with prototype models trying to design a challenge that would stretch the creative minds of the kids as well as creating a challenge that would be interesting. We spent the entire first day creating these prototypes then finally decided to make a rubber band powered Rover. I thought that today was a great success, I was able to use different strategies to create a better final product as well as use my time efficiently.
Day 4: This was my last day working at Big Brothers Big Sisters. As soon as we got there I got straight to work. I had what seemed like an insurmountable task in front of me. I had to create 20 rover kits and design a poster to go alongside. Today tested my abilities, I had to overcome a large load of stress as well as improve my communication skills with my partner. Throughout these last two days I have had my original idea of volunteering thrown out the window. I have realized that it is not as time consuming as I would have thought, and even the small things that were possible for me to do have a big impact on the community. This experience has opened up my eyes to the world of volunteering.
