Socialization and Mask Project
Project Description: The purpose of this project was to understand socialization and how it affects you. During this unit we read documents on how important socialization is to humans and that it is nurture not nature that makes us who we are. Our end goal was to spread light on the topic of socialization within our community. A crucial topic very often overlooked. We wanted to find a way to allow people to realize how they have been socialized and what is good and bad about socialization. To do this we created a socialization maze for our exhibition.
Explain how you have grown as a writer in this project:
I have grown as a writer throughout this project in many ways, the most noticeable was learning how to properly include evidence into my TEA paragraph. A example of this is my introduction paragraph. “Ted talk a call to Men Tony Porter, a activist was interviewing a 12 year old football player asking how he would feel if his coach said he played like a girl. “the boy said to me, It would destroy me. And I said to myself, God, if it would destroy him to be called a girl, what are we then teaching him about girls?”. In my first draft I was unsure of how to properly portray my evidence as well as cite it. When I got to the final draft I was able to portray and cite my evidence in a manner in which it was easy to read and understand where the information was inside my essay. Learning these skills will be a lifelong skill that will benefit all my writing to come.
What are your largest takeaways from this project and how have they transformed the way you see the world?:
My largest takeaway from this project is being able to understand why people have the certain beliefs they have and why they won't change them. I used to wonder why people wouldn't change their beliefs on certain topics like racism for the better. I now understand this is because these people have been taught this through very influential people in there lives these beliefs and won’t let them go. Some evidence to support this comes from the book mexican whiteboy. Danny had these beliefs that he would not let go of because very important people in his life taught him these things. This was my largest takeaway because it showed me what other people have been influenced by and what I have been influenced by so I can begin to have a open mind on topics that I have been influenced in.
What were your goals as a group worker and what challenges/successes did you have reaching your goals?:
My goal as a group worker was to become more trusting of my group. When I work in groups I tend to become very stressed that the rest of my group is not going to finish or remember to complete their tasks. During this project I tried hard to not worry about the other people in my groups tasks and trust that they could get it done. This was very hard for me and caused extra stress but in the end it was worth it. We came out with a product that was very professional and impacted the whole exhibition. If I were to be as controlling as usual I feel like lots of the ideas that made our room stand out would have been shot down creating something that could not reach its potential.
Describe what you did as a group member and how it contributed to the success of the exhibition:
My role through this exhibition changed frequently. Near the beginning I was part of the videography team. What I created there was the main event in or second room. My partner and I created a video of certain students who had very influential essays. We gathered several students, had them say how they had been socialized and some solutions for the problem. Later on I began helping with the lighting of the two rooms. We wanted a professional look so we decided to route the wires throughout the roof of the rooms making the lighting easier to manage and more professional looking. My job during the exhibition was to help direct people through our mask room then to the final video room so they could get a good look at the majority of people's masks to get a better understanding of what the video was about.
